Veterans receiving monthly disability compensation can expect an unusual payment calendar in October 2026.
According to the official VA payment schedule, two separate direct deposits will land in bank accounts within the same calendar month.
Key October 2026 Payment Dates
The first payment arrives on Thursday, October 1, 2026, covering benefits earned in September.
The second payment will land on Friday, October 30, 2026, which covers the October benefit period.
Why the Shift Happens
The Department of Veterans Affairs pays disability benefits in arrears, meaning each deposit covers the prior month's entitlement.
Because November 1 falls on a Sunday, the VA shifts the deposit to the last preceding business day—Friday, October 30.
This is not a bonus or double payment, so no additional deposit will occur at the start of November.
Updated 2026 Compensation Rates
Monthly compensation amounts reflect the 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) that took effect for 2026.
A single veteran with a 10% disability rating receives $180.42 per month, while a 20% rating pays $356.66.
At a 100% disability rating, single veterans receive $3,938.58 monthly, while those with a spouse and child receive $4,318.99.
Veterans with disability ratings of 30% or higher remain eligible for additional allowance top-ups for qualifying dependents.
Eligibility Guidelines
Tax-free disability compensation requires an injury, illness, or condition linked to military service, along with a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable.
Covered conditions include physical injuries, mental health conditions like PTSD, and presumptive illnesses linked to toxic exposures such as burn pits or Agent Orange.
