Is the $900 Pet Tax Credit Real? Here's What Pet Owners Should Know

You may have heard about a possible $900 tax credit for dog and cat owners in New York. Here's what's actually going on.

What Is the Proposed 'CARE' Law?

A bill in the New York State Assembly, nicknamed the "CARE" law, would let pet owners claim tax credits for the costs of caring for up to two pets.

The goal is to help people manage the everyday and medical expenses that come with owning a pet.

How Much Money Could Pet Owners Get?

If the bill passes, pet owners could receive:

  • Up to $150 per pet for everyday items like food, leashes, litter, carriers, and toys
  • Up to $300 per pet for vet bills, including check-ups, medications, tests, and emergency care

This means owners of two pets could get up to $900 per year in total.

However, this money wouldn't come automatically. Pet owners would need to save their receipts and report their actual expenses when filing their taxes.

Is This Law in Effect Yet?

No, not yet. The bill has been introduced and sent to a committee for review, but it hasn't been approved. If it does pass, it would only apply to expenses starting in 2026 or later.

Does This Apply to Everyone in the U.S.?

No. This is a New York state proposal only. It is not a federal law, so pet owners in other states would not qualify unless their state passes a similar law.

Watch Out for Misinformation

Some headlines make it sound like this tax credit already exists or applies nationwide. That's not true. There is no federal pet tax credit at this time.

Also, be careful not to confuse private promotions or sweepstakes with official government tax benefits. They are not the same thing.

What Should Pet Owners Do Now?

If you're a pet owner in New York, it's a good idea to:

  1. Keep detailed records and receipts for pet-related expenses
  2. Stay updated on the progress of this bill

If the law passes, it could provide real financial relief for people who spend a lot on pet care each year.
