The 2025 tax season in the United States is coming up soon. This is the time when every U.S. citizen needs to prepare their documents and decide how to file their taxes.
Even though it may feel like there's plenty of time, the deadline to submit your taxes is fast approaching. Starting preparations early can help avoid last-minute rushes and issues.
It's also wise to start saving some money now, just in case you owe more taxes than expected after all your documents are sorted and sent to the IRS.
Key Deadlines and Dates
- Tax Season Opening: The tax season usually starts in late January. For example, in 2024, it began on January 29th. While the exact date for 2025 hasn't been announced, it's likely to be around the same time.
- Filing Deadline: The main deadline for filing your federal tax return is April 15, 2025. If you can't make this date due to reasons like living in a disaster-hit area, such as those affected by Hurricane Helene, you may have until May 1, 2025. Military service members who are overseas get similar extensions.
- Extension Request: If you need more time to file your taxes, you can request an extension until October 15, 2025. Remember, an extension to file does not mean an extension to pay any taxes you owe – those are still due by April 15 to avoid penalties.
State Specific Dates
Be sure to check the deadlines specific to your state as these can vary. States like Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, and Virginia have different deadlines from the federal ones.
Refunds
If you are expecting a refund due to overpaid taxes and you file electronically, you could receive your refund within about 21 days from filing, provided there are no issues with your return.
Those claiming credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit will see their refunds processed starting February 27, 2025, in accordance with federal rules, though it might take a bit longer to access these funds.
