State Checks in 2025: Who Is Getting Financial Assistance This Year?

As direct federal payments come to an end this year, many states are stepping in to help residents using their own funds.

Thanks to budget surpluses, several states are offering tax rebates and relief payments that will continue through the end of 2025 and into early 2026.

Here’s what you need to know about these programs.

IRS Recovery Rebate Payments

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is finishing the distribution of about $2.4 billion in payments, with some taxpayers receiving up to $1,400 each.

These aren't new payments, but instead, they are part of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. This is aimed at people who were eligible in 2021 but did not claim the credit at that time.

Alaska’s Permanent Dividend Fund (PFD)

Alaska continues to offer its Permanent Dividend Fund, which shares some of the state’s oil revenues with residents.

  • Amount: $1,000 for each eligible resident.
  • Who Qualifies: Those who lived in Alaska all through 2024.
  • Payment Date: Payments are set for December 18, as long as applications were submitted before December 10.

New York State Relief Checks

New York is using its surplus money to help residents manage the rising cost of living.

  • Amount: Checks range from $150 to $400.
  • Who Qualifies: Eligibility is based on 2023 state tax returns.
  • Timing: Payments will be made in stages through the end of December 2025, and possibly into early 2026.

Colorado TABOR Refunds

Colorado is sending money back to taxpayers as part of its TABOR (Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights) refunds.

  • Amount: Refunds range from $177 to $1,130 per person, depending on marital status and income.
  • Funding Source: The state’s $1.7 billion budget surplus.
  • Note: Refunds after 2026 are likely to be much smaller.

New Jersey’s ANCHOR Program

New Jersey’s ANCHOR program aims to help both homeowners and renters cover high property taxes, though specific details on amounts were not provided in the scraped information.
