Trump Proposes Up to $2,000 Stimulus Checks for Americans from Tariff Revenue

Former President Donald Trump has suggested a new plan to give Americans stimulus checks of $1,000 to $2,000 each.

Instead of borrowing money or increasing the national debt, Trump says the government could use money it has collected from tariffs—taxes paid on goods imported to the United States.

Where Would the Money Come From?

Trump’s idea is to use the billions of dollars the government has taken in from these import taxes. In 2025 alone, government records show more than $214.9 billion has been collected from tariffs.

Trump described this payment as a “distribution” or “dividend” to the American people, almost like sharing profits.

Is the Proposal Possible?

The plan depends on whether the government can use tariff revenue in this way. Right now, the policy that brought in this money is under review in court.

The Supreme Court is considering if Trump had the authority to put these tariffs in place. If the court says he did not, the money may not be available for stimulus payments.

What Did Trump Say?

In an interview, Trump explained, “We might as well do a distribution to the people, almost like a dividend for the people of the United States. We’re thinking maybe $1,000 to $2,000; that would be great.”

He also mentioned that while the government should focus on paying down debt, this direct payment to the people is being seriously considered.

Has This Been Suggested Before?

This is not the first time such an idea has come up in 2025. Earlier that year, Elon Musk, who was leading the Department of Government Efficiency, suggested giving out $5,000 checks to Americans.

However, that plan did not move forward and Musk eventually left his position.
